Why we ask so many questions about your device

A person holding a cell phone

The alternative to the questions is not a shorter form. It is a number that changes when somebody arrives.

A minute of questions feels like a lot when a shop would just look at the phone. It exists for a reason, and the reason is the thing everybody wants: a number that does not change later.

Each question is a line in the price

Nothing is asked out of curiosity. The panel, the glass, the body, each camera, each speaker, the port, the battery, the parts, the accessories — every one of them maps to something the price table prices. Ask fewer questions and you do not get a simpler price; you get a range, and a range has to be narrowed by somebody standing in your hallway.

They are asked separately on purpose

A single "is it damaged?" would turn one broken camera into a verdict on the whole phone. Asked separately, one fault is one deduction and everything else about the device is still worth what it is worth. That is why a phone with a shattered screen and a perfect battery does better than people expect.

Nothing is asked that cannot be checked

This is the constraint that keeps the list honest. Every question is something our agent can verify at your door in a few minutes — which is why you are not asked for a camera's shutter count, or anything else nobody could confirm. If it cannot be checked, it cannot be priced, so it is not asked.

The questions are the same for everyone

One table, the same questions, the same arithmetic. Two people selling the same phone in the same condition see the same number, and there is nothing to negotiate in either direction. Why two of the same phone can still differ.

What you can do to make them worth answering

Answer from the device, not from memory. Ten minutes with a white screen, the camera app and your own charging cable is what turns the quote from an estimate into the amount that lands in your account. How to check it the way the rider will.

Questions people ask

Why not just ask if the phone is in good condition?
Because “good” means different things to different people, and the difference is real money. Asking about the panel, the glass, the body and each function separately is what produces a number that holds.
Are the questions used to lower the price?
They set the price, up and down. A phone with nothing wrong with it answers no to everything and lands at the top of its range.
What if I answer something wrong by mistake?
The rider shows you what they found and what it changes before anything is agreed, and you can decline. Honest mistakes are not a problem; guessing is what causes them.
