What “refurbished” actually means

Four words used loosely for four different things. Here is what each one is, and which one your old phone becomes.
The words get used loosely, including by people selling things. Here is what each one means, and where your old phone fits.
Second-hand
Sold on as it is, by whoever owned it, with no work done. A marketplace listing is second-hand. What you see is what arrives, and the risk is the buyer's.
Refurbished
Tested, repaired where it needed it, wiped, and prepared for resale. A battery may have been replaced, a screen may have been replaced, and the device has been through a set of functional checks before being sold again. That work is why a refurbished phone costs more than the same phone sold second-hand, and why it usually comes with some form of warranty.
Renewed, certified, pre-owned
Marketing words for refurbished, generally with a claim about who did the refurbishing and what cover comes with it. Worth reading the specific promise rather than the word.
Open box
A device that was bought and returned, often within days, and so cannot be sold as sealed. Usually barely used. Different from refurbished, because nothing needed doing to it.
Grades
Most sellers grade cosmetic condition on a scale of their own — A, B, C, or "excellent, good, fair". A grade tells you how the phone looks. It does not tell you whether it works, which is tested separately, and it is not comparable between two sellers who set their own scales.
Where your phone goes
Every device we collect is graded on arrival, and that grade decides its route: refurbished and resold, broken down for parts, or recycled. The whole path is here.
What that means for you is simpler than the vocabulary suggests: a phone in good condition with original parts goes down the most valuable route, which is exactly why the quote asks about the panel, the parts and the battery rather than just the model.

Questions people ask
- What does refurbished mean?
- A used device that has been tested, repaired where it needed it, wiped, and prepared for resale. It is not the same as a phone simply sold on as-is by its previous owner.
- What do grades like A, B and C mean?
- They describe cosmetic condition — how the phone looks — on a scale each seller sets for itself. They are not a statement about whether it works, which is tested separately.
- Is open box the same as refurbished?
- No. Open box usually means a device that was bought and returned quickly, so it is close to new but no longer sealed.
