Leaving the UAE? Selling your phone before you fly

The phone is usually the last thing you can sell before you leave, because you need it until the end. Here is how to time it, and how to be paid before your bank account closes.

Moving out of the UAE comes with a long list, and the phone sits awkwardly on it: it is worth selling, but it is also the thing you need until the very end — for boarding passes, bank codes and the calls that come with handing over a flat. So the order matters.

Which phone, and when

If you are taking a new phone with you, sell the old one once the new one is fully set up — but keep a day or two in hand before you fly. Do not book the pickup for the morning of the flight: a delay, a missed slot or a code that still goes to the old phone is a problem you do not need that day.

If you are selling the only phone you have and buying again abroad, the same logic applies in reverse: sell it last, after everything that needs a UAE code is done.

Move what is tied to the UAE

Before the reset:

  • UAE Pass, so you can still sign in to government services from abroad if you need to;
  • your banking apps — registering them on another device needs a code sent to your UAE number;
  • anything else that sends a one-time code by SMS.

The full UAE checklist is here. And keep your UAE number active until your accounts are closed, your deposit is back and your final bills are paid: a cancelled number cannot receive the code that a bank asks for.

Being paid before the account closes

If your UAE bank account is closing, think about how you are paid. You can take cash at the door, or a bank transfer to your IBAN made before the rider leaves — with the payment reference on screen while they are still standing there. If you choose the transfer, make sure the account is still open on the day of the pickup. More on how fast you get paid.

Selling everything in one go

A move usually means a laptop, a tablet or a watch as well. These can go in one pickup: add each device, book one slot, and the rider checks, resets and pays for each of them at the door.

What happens at the door

The rider checks each device against your answers, shows you any change before anything is agreed, factory resets it in front of you and pays you there. Pickup is free, and if your plans change you can cancel at no cost — including at the door.

Questions people ask

Can I be paid in cash?
Yes. You can be paid in cash at the door, or by bank transfer to your IBAN before the rider leaves — useful when a bank account is about to close.
Can I sell more than one device in one pickup?
Yes. Add each device, and the rider collects them together in the same slot.
How late can I book?
Pick any day and two-hour slot that is open in your area. Leave a margin before your flight rather than booking the last slot of your last day.
