You lost the box, the charger or the bill. Now what?

The short answer is: sell it anyway. The longer answer is about which one is worth ten minutes of searching.

This question comes up more than any other except the price itself, and the answer is short: none of the three is required, and a phone with none of them still sells. What follows is how much each one is actually worth, so you know what is worth looking for.

The bill: worth ten minutes, if the phone is new enough

The bill matters for exactly one reason — it proves when the phone was bought, and therefore whether it is still inside the manufacturer's warranty. An in-warranty phone with the bill prices higher than the same phone without it.

So: if the phone is under about a year and a half old, spend ten minutes looking. It is almost never on paper. Check the order history in the shopping app you bought it from, then search your email for the model name. If the phone is three years old, skip it — out of warranty, the bill changes very little.

How to check the warranty is a post of its own.

The charger: worth finding, especially on a laptop or watch

The original charger adds a little to a phone's price. On a laptop or a smartwatch it is worth more attention, because those are the devices that are hardest to power on with whatever is lying around — and a device the rider cannot switch on is a device that cannot be checked properly at your door.

A third-party charger is not the original one, does not count as it, and is yours to keep.

The box: hand it over if you have it, do not hunt for it

An original box adds a little on its own. It is not worth a search of the loft and it is certainly not worth buying a replacement. If it is on top of a cupboard, bring it down; if it went out with last year's cleaning, that is fine.

What none of them can do

None of the three offsets damage. The screen, the body, the faults and the battery are most of the quote; the accessories are the last few lines. A phone in good condition with nothing in the box beats a battered one that still has its packaging, every time.

What to do now

Answer the questions honestly about what you have, and put whatever you found next to the phone for the pickup. See what your phone is worth — the pickup is free either way.

Questions people ask

Can I sell a phone without the bill?
Yes. The bill proves the purchase date, which is what lets an in-warranty phone claim the higher price. Out of warranty, it changes very little.
Is the box worth keeping for resale?
It adds a little on its own. It is not worth buying a replacement box, and an empty original box you still have is worth handing over.
I have a third-party charger, not the original. Does that count?
No, and it does not have to go with the device. Keep it.
