Doorstep pickup, the local shop, or a listing: what actually changes

Three ways to sell the same phone. The price is only part of what differs between them.

There are three ways to turn an old phone into money in Dubai: a doorstep buyer like TurnCash, the mobile shop down the road, or a listing on a marketplace. People compare them on price, which is fair, but price is the part that varies least. What differs is everything around it.

Price

A doorstep buyer prices the phone online, from a published table, before anyone visits — the number is fixed and it is the same for everyone. A shop prices it at the counter, and the number depends on the shop, the day and how the conversation goes. A listing has no price until a buyer offers one, and the offer usually arrives after a round of messages asking what your lowest is.

Time

Online, a price takes about a minute and the pickup is in a two-hour slot you choose. The shop is a trip, and a second trip if they are shut or short of cash. A listing is days: photographing it, answering messages, arranging a meeting, and the buyer who does not turn up.

Where you are

A doorstep buyer comes to your address. The shop is their counter. A listing is wherever you and a stranger agree to meet, with the phone in your pocket.

Payment

At the door, a TurnCash agent pays before leaving — in cash, or by bank transfer with the reference on screen. A shop pays once you have agreed — cash or transfer, depending on the shop. A listing is cash from someone you do not know, or a transfer you wait for.

Your data

At pickup the phone is reset in front of you, before it leaves your hands. At a shop, it depends on the shop. With a listing, you are on your own — and a buyer who wants to check the phone works will want to see it switched on with something on it.

Changing your mind

Booking a TurnCash pickup costs nothing, and so does deciding at the door that you would rather keep the phone. A shop lets you walk out. A listing lets you relist.

When a shop or a listing makes sense

If you enjoy negotiating and have time, a listing can find a buyer who wants your exact phone and will pay for it. If the shop is a neighbour you trust, that trust is worth something. What a doorstep buyer offers is not the highest possible number on the best possible day; it is a fixed number, a chosen time, and the whole thing finished at your door in five minutes.

Our own price for your phone takes about a minute to see on the sell page, and seeing it commits you to nothing.

Questions people ask

Is it better to sell a phone online or at a shop?
A shop can pay well if you know the owner and enjoy negotiating. An online doorstep buyer gives you a fixed price before anyone visits, a slot you choose, and payment at your door. The trade is a possible little extra against a settled number and no trip.
Why is a marketplace listing usually slower?
Because the price is discovered rather than published: you photograph the phone, answer messages, agree a meeting, and sometimes the buyer does not arrive. Doorstep pickup skips all of that.
Do I pay anything for a doorstep pickup?
No. Pickup is free, and changing your mind at the door costs nothing.
