Charging habits that protect your battery — and your price

Two phones on white table

The battery is one of the questions in every quote. Almost everything that protects it is about heat.

Battery condition is a question in every quote we produce, and it is the one thing on the list you can still influence years ahead of selling. Almost all of it comes down to heat.

What actually ages a battery

A lithium cell loses capacity with charge cycles, and it loses it faster when it is hot. Everything below follows from that.

Five habits worth having

  1. Keep it out of heat. A phone on a dashboard in the sun, charging under a pillow, or in a case while gaming on a fast charger is being cooked. This does more damage than any charging pattern.
  2. Leave optimised charging on. iPhones and most Android phones learn your routine and hold the charge below full until shortly before you wake. It is on by default and it exists precisely for this.
  3. Do not chase zero or a hundred. Deep discharges are hard on a cell and there is no benefit to running it flat. Partial top-ups whenever it suits you are fine.
  4. Use fast charging when you need it, not always. The speed is there for the day you have twenty minutes. Overnight, the phone has eight hours and no reason to hurry.
  5. Take the case off if the phone gets hot while charging. Especially a thick case, especially with fast charging.

What is not worth worrying about

Charging overnight on a modern phone. Using the phone while it charges, unless it is getting hot. Which brand of certified charger you use, as long as it is a real one.

The one that matters for selling

A battery that has begun to swell — a back panel that no longer sits flat, or a screen lifting at one edge. That is a fault, it gets worse, and it can damage the screen and the back from the inside. It is priced as a deduction like any other, and it is the clearest case there is for selling now rather than storing the phone for another six months.

And when you do sell

On an iPhone, the figure you will be asked for is in Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. What the number means. On Android, the question is behavioural — and the habits above are what decide the answer.

Questions people ask

Does overnight charging damage the battery?
Modern phones manage this themselves with optimised or adaptive charging, holding at a lower level and finishing before you wake. Leave that setting on and overnight charging is not the problem it once was.
Should I let the battery run to zero?
No. Deep discharges are harder on a lithium cell than partial ones. Charge when it suits you.
Does fast charging ruin a battery?
It generates more heat, which is the thing that ages a cell. Occasional fast charging is fine; fast charging a hot phone repeatedly is the habit worth changing.
